After a year of renting in the Dublin city center, my boyfriend and I decided to buy a house. It sounds like a big commitment, right? Well, it’s even more daunting than it sounds!
Neither of us is Irish and only I currently live in the city... To give you an even better idea of how intimidating this project is, we had no idea where we should start when buying a house in Ireland, how the banking system works, which documents were needed, the Irish property market, WHERE to buy a house, which areas to avoid ... and so on and on.
We found that we had to learn a completely different set of ‘rules’, compared to what we were used to or knew in Italy, our home country.
But this is the age of technology, and free-flowing information and Google! Surely, with a bit of effort, you can find most of the information you need online. Yes, yes you can. However, it’s not 'a bit of effort', it’s after a massive amount of effort and it’s not ‘most of the information', but maybe half of it.
And this is why I wanted to share our experience in a blog. After only a couple of months into our quest to find the perfect house, as a foreigner, there is so much information that would have made my life incredibly easier if I knew it when we started!
The chance that I’ll become an expert on this subject is so remote that we’ll not even consider it, but why not share our wonderful (and, at the same time, very painful) experience? It might prevent other lovely foreign house hunters from being tempted to destroy their computers in a fit of rage..
So to begin, here are
If you had asked me a year and a half ago if I intended to buy a house any time soon, I would have replied by raising an eyebrow and saying that I’m too young for such a thing..
However, now that I’ve thought through all the pros and cons, buying a house is a win-win all the way: I would pay the same as I’m paying right now, and I would also get to keep the house in the end!
I hope you’ll enjoy this blog as much as I’ll love sharing our experience with you. Stay tuned for more posts!
