Why it's important to buy a couple of extra boxes .. of everything.
A year after we bought our kitchen from IKEA (February 2016), they discontinued the cabinet door's model we had bought: Brokhult.
Funny tidbit? They must have already known this was in the plans because it was announced not two months later, but, obviously, nobody mentioned it before we gave them our money.
After we replaced the kitchen boiler last winter, we realised that we would also need to replace a cabinet door... which is when I found out that they don't sell them anymore and I couldn't buy them on eBay.
I contacted the customer support at IKEA, and they reassured me that I could go to the store and they would order it for me there; here's a screenshot of that chat conversation:
I went to the store, explained my situation and the very first response was: "We don't do that". Only after insisting that they double check or, at least, offer me another solution, they called their customer service department and confirmed that they do indeed do that.
According to the IKEA support, my new cabinet doorS (yes, I ordered more than one just for precaution) would arrive in approximately 10 days and that I don't have to worry about the exact date because they would call me an hour before they deliver.
The doors did arrive in 10 days, however, they did *not* call before delivering - I was just very lucky I was home by chance.
Also, now that I was on guard about IKEA's trend to discontinue products on a frequent basis, I didn't want to have the same problem with my couch cover (my puppy has very sharp nails): NOCKEBY cover for a two-seat sofa w chaise longue and a footstool.
Guess what? They told me that they already discontinued it for the footstool (I bought it in April 2016). Fortunately, if anything happens, we can always resort to ordering one from this site: Bemz.
After this experience I 100% endorse my boyfriend's caution in buying a couple of extra boxes of everything. For example, we bought 5/6 extra boxes of the laminate floor boards (Knotex Mammut laminate (oak beige)) and the bathroom tiles (tile Extreme Blanco Matt (900x300x9mm)), and I feel much more reassured that if one floorboard or tile needs replacing in the future, we won't have to worry about finding those products.
